Maesil’s Seasons
Winter Blooms: The First Markers of Spring
As time crawls into the laziness of late summer and early autumn, tender bud shoots start to form in our orchard. Going along the same cycle, the tiny bud shoots go dormant from mid-November to mid-December. Once the trees wake from dormancy, the bud shoots grow at a rapid rate and soon come to form flower buds.
Spring Flowers: Blooming in Full Glory
Maehwa (plum) blossoms are able to endure long winters with bitter cold spells and are one of the first blossoms to announce the coming of spring and warmer weather. Maehwa blossoms begin to open up at the end of February to mid March, and usually are in full bloom until the end of March. The length of the blooming season is strongly affected by the surrounding air temperature.
At the Cheong Maesil Plum Farm, our climate ranges from 7-8 degrees in Celcius, which is ideal for maehwa blossoms. During March, the beauty of the maehwa blossoms and the heady scented air attract countless numbers of visitors, tourists, local guests, bees and butterflies to our orchards.
Summer Fruit: Green & Ripened for Harvest
Bees, butterflies and birds busily spread pollen from the blooms and the companion plants during the next couple of months. After the fruits begin to form on the tree, our family carefully nourish the trees with nutrients and care until they reach maturity in late May. For the whole month of June, the local community and family members gather together every day to harvest the fruits.
