Maesil’s Origins
Maesil plums originate from China, in the mountainous regions in Sichuan and Hubei provinces. Prized for the beauty of its blossoms, the fruit is first mentioned in the Chinese The Book of Odes, which is one of the oldest written poetry books in China. Seeds found in an ancient national cemetery tomb located in Hubei province provided physical proof that maesil trees were cultivated some 3,000 years ago.
From ages past, maesil plums have frequently been used for medicinal practices. In ancient medical textbooks dating back as far as 2,000 years ago, one can find excerpts on how maesil plums were used as health remedies in China and East Asia.
